چکیده

Delay-locked loop (DLL) and phase-locked loop (PLL) designs based upon self-biased techniques are presented. The DLL and PLL designs achieve process technology independence, fixed damping factor, fixed bandwidth to operating frequency ratio, broad frequency range, input phase offset cancellation, and, most importantly, low input tracking jitter. Both the damping factor and the bandwidth to operating frequency ratio are determined completely by a ratio of capacitances. Self-biasing avoids the necessity for external biasing, which can require special bandgap bias circuits, by generating all of the internal bias voltages and currents from each other so that the bias levels are completely determined by the operating conditions. Fabricated in a 0.5m N -well CMOS gate array process, the PLL achieves an operating frequency range of 0.0025 MHz to 550 MHz and input tracking jitter of 384 ps at 250 MHz with 500 mV of low frequency square wave supply noise.

Low Jitter Low Power Phase Locked Loops Using Sub - Sampling Phase Detection

A periodic clock signal is required in many ICs. These clocks are for instance used to define the sampling moments in data converters; to up-convert and down-convert the wanted signals in wireless transceivers and to synchronize the data flow in wireline and optical serial data communication links. The clock timing/phase accuracy affects the overall system performance and therefore a clock gene...

Low-Jitter Clock Multiplication: A Comparison Between PLLs and DLLs

This paper shows that, for a given power budget, a practical phase-locked loop (PLL)-based clock multiplier generates less jitter than a delay-locked loop (DLL) equivalent. This is due to the fact that the delay cells in a PLL ring-oscillator can consume more power per cell than their counterparts in the DLL. We can show that this effect is stronger than the notorious jitter accumulation effect...

Design of CMOS Adaptive-Bandwidth PLL/DLLs: A General Approach

A phase-locked loop (PLL) and delay-locked loop (DLL) design with adaptively adjusting bandwidth enables optimal performance over a wide frequency range and across process, voltage, and temperature variations. A design methodology of such adaptive-bandwidth PLLs and DLLs is described. To assess the impact of each circuit parameter directly, we derive a discrete-time, open-loop dynamic model of ...

Dual Edge Triggered Phase Detector for DLL and PLL Applications

An ASIC design of Dual Edge Triggered Phase Detector(DET PD) for Delay locked loop(DLL) and Phase locked loop(PLL) applications is proposed in this paper. The proposed DET PD has high locking speed and less jitter. The designs are based on TSPC flip flop logic, which overcomes the issue of narrow capture range. The Double edge triggered phase detector dissipates less power than conventional desi...
